The aim of sensory education is to give the child the opportunity to obtain clear and conscious information from the environment through their senses – and thus enable them to explore their surroundings and the world more deeply and accurately. Marie Montessori believed that a child perceives with all of their senses from birth. Through their senses, the child becomes familiar with their surroundings, studies them – and thanks to these findings then begins to understand them as well. The child is thus a “sensory explorer”.
Children do not learn by us only telling them something, but primarily through their own experiences – by being able to touch and try things out. Children are most open to developing their senses roughly from 2 to 6 years; in this period it is very important to give them as many opportunities as possible to develop all their senses.
